
Koenig Named Sun National Bank ECHL Saver of the Month

SAN DIEGO â Gulls goaltender Trevor Koenig has been named the Sun National Bank ECHL Saver of the Month for January. Koenig was named the ITECH HOCKEY ECHL Saver of the Week on Tuesday.
Koenig went 10-1-1 with a 1.81 goals-against average and .936 save percentage in 12 games in January. He won his last seven starts of the month and has now improved his record to 22-6-3, while lowing his GAA from 2.48 to 2.33 while raising his save percentage from .909 to .915. He also spearheaded the Gulls to an ECHL season-high nine-game winning streak and a home winning streak of 11, also a league high for the season.
Named ECHL Saver of the Week for Jan 26 â Feb. 1 and runner-up for the award the previous week, Koenig leads the ECHL in shootout percentage (.853) and is tied for the league lead with four shootout wins. He ranks second with 22 wins overall and is tied for third with three shutouts. Koenig is eighth in the ECHL with his 2.33 GAA.
Koenig, who opened the month with three straight wins, had a 17-save performance in a 6-1 win against Idaho on Jan. 2 and 22 saves in a 3-2 win against Las Vegas on Jan. 3. He made 31 saves in a 4-2 victory at Alaska on Jan. 9 before losing 4-2 at Alaska Jan. 10. Koenig came back on Jan. 11 and made a season-high 42 saves but suffered a 4-3-shootout loss.
He began the seven-game winning streak with 21 saves in a 4-2 win against Alaska on Jan. 17 and had 20 saves in a 2-1 win over the Aces on Jan. 18. Koenig turned aside 25 shots in a 4-1 win against Bakersfield on Jan. 24 and had 29 saves against the Condors on Jan. 25.
After making 33 saves in a 5-2 win at Las Vegas Jan. 27, Koenig stopped all six shooters in a shootout and made 31 saves in San Diego's 3-2 triumph over Idaho on Friday. The 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pounder from Edmonton, Alberta came right back Saturday with 28 saves in a 4-2 defeat against Bakersfield.
The two-time West Coast Hockey League Goaltender of the Year has won 20-or-more games in each of his four seasons with the Gulls, including a career-high 42 in 2001-02. Koenig has also backstopped San Diego to the WCHL Taylor Cup Championship twice (2001 and 2003).
Koenig is 121-45-14 with 17 shutouts, a 2.39 GAA and .916 save percentage in 186 career regular season games with the Gulls. He's the franchise's all-time leader in GAA, shutouts and save percentage. Koenig is second all-time in appearances, wins, minutes played and saves.
