Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Beginning with tonight's game, the Charlotte Knights are planning to "Go Gold" during their final three-game homestand of the 2015 regular season at BB&T Ballpark. The "Go Gold" initiative is for Harlan's Heroes, a non-profit charity which is dedicated to spread awareness and aid those affected by pediatric cancer with an emphasis on recurring brain cancer.
Harlan's Heroes was created in memory of four-year-old Harlan Sullins, who battled brain cancer and relapse for nearly two years. He was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor, Ependymoma, on February 7, 2013, and passed away from the disease on October 25, 2014. Since then, there have been roughly 2,100 children in the United States that have passed away from pediatric cancer. Harlan's parents Jacki and Jonathan, natives of Rock Hill, SC, created the non-profit charity two days after Harlan's passing.
Since 1978, the gold ribbon and gold light have been the symbol representing the world's youngest cancer patients and honors their courageous struggle against child and adolescent cancer. The Knights will honor the memory of Harlan by painting a gold ribbon on the grass area behind home plate at BB&T Ballpark. The ribbon will be prominently displayed during the team's final three-game homestand of the 2015 regular season (September 2-4).
"Harlan's Heroes main objective is to allow families to be a family as long as possible," stated Jonathan Sullins, Vice-President of Harlan's Heroes. "Thank you to the Charlotte Knights for honoring Harlan, Harlan's Heroes, and all childhood cancer fighters, survivors, and those that have paid the ultimate price to this unimaginable disease. Childhood cancer does not discriminate. It knows no boundaries."
