Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs are pleased to announce that head groundskeeper John Stewart has been named the 2015 International League Sports Turf Manager of the Year. Stewart is the first Chiefs groundskeeper to win the award in its 24-year existence.

"I will put John Stewart and our grounds crew up against any grounds crew at any time", said Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol. "John does an amazing job while battling every kind of weather over the course of a year. This award is a testament to him and his whole crew, whose professionalism, preparedness and dedication deserve to be recognized."

The Sports Turf Manager of the Year was established in 1992 to recognize outstanding effort and excellence in the care and maintenance of a baseball playing surface. The award is voted on by the field managers and pitching coaches of the International League.

Stewart, who is in his sixth season as head groundskeeper for the Chiefs, is just the 12th recipient of the award in its 24-year history. He is the first groundskeeper from a North Division team to win the award since the International League adopted a three-division setup in 1998. Stewart is also the first groundskeeper to win the award from a franchise located north of Toledo since Al Dungey of the 1995 Ottawa Lynx.

Stewart is now eligible for the Triple-A classification's Sports Turf Manager of the Year Award as selected by the Sports Turf Managers Association. That award is presented annually at the Baseball Winter Meetings.
