Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (62-77) dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker to the Pawtucket Red Sox (56-83) on Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Pigs RHP Dustin McGowan issued a walk to Carlos Rivero on a very close 3-2 pitch which allowed the go-ahead run to score for the PawSox and gave the hosts a 6-5 lead. Pawtucket had loaded the bases courtesy of two walks and a single that all came with two away.
McGowan (1.0 IP, H, R, ER, 3 BB, 3 K) was tagged with the loss for the IronPigs and falls to 2-2 on the year.
RHP Jorge Marban (1.2 IP, H, 2 K) earned the win for the Red Sox and is now 3-0 on the season.
Lehigh Valley put the leadoff runner on in the top of the ninth, but was unable to push across the tying run against Marban.
The Pigs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Brian Bogusevic (2-5, 2 R) reached via a two-out single and scored from first on Russ Canzler's (2-5, 2B, RBI, R) RBI double.
Pawtucket tied it with a run in the second as Jonathan Roof got on base with a bloop double and later scored on Aneury Tavarez's RBI single.
Chris Marrero led off the home half of the fourth with a leadoff double and scored on Garin Cecchini's RBI single to give the PawSox a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Chase d'Arnaud singled with two away and scored from first on Tyler Pastornicky's (2-5, RBI) RBI single.
Pigs starter Severino Gonzalez (n/d) gave up four runs on eight hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
Pawtucket starter William Cuevas (n/d) allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and fanning six in six innings of work.
A two-run fifth gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead for the time being as Rivero came through with an RBI single and Marrero grounded into a 6-4-3 double play which allowed a run to score in the inning.
Pawtucket extended the lead to 5-2 with a run in the sixth as Tavarez reached a force out, moved to third on a double and scored on Luis Martinez's RBI single. The run was charged to RHP Chris Leroux (1.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, K).
Lehigh Valley tied it at five apiece in the top of the eighth courtesy of Tommy Joseph's three-run shot off of LHP Robby Scott (1.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K). The home run was Joseph's second of the season.
Logan Moore (2-3) also had a multi-hit game for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
RHP Nefi Ogando (1.0 IP, H, K) tossed a scoreless inning in relief for the Pigs.
The IronPigs will open up a two-game set with the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. as RHP David Buchanan (4-2, 3.14) gets the ball for the Pigs against Syracuse LHP Richard Bleier (6-2, 2.93).
