Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning sent the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 6-5 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium. Aneury Taveras made a leaping catch on the warning track in right field to preserve the win in the top of the ninth. William Cuevas had given the PawSox six strong innings before the Pigs tied it late, but the free pass to Carlos Rivero pushed the Sox to a sweep of the two-game set and earned Pawtucket a win in the season series with Lehigh Valley.
The PawSox had set the table for Rivero in the ninth with a pair of walks and a Deven Marrero single. Dustin McGowan had struck out the first two hitters of the eighth but suffered the loss.
Early in the evening, it looked like the Sox would cruise for a second straight night. After the Iron Pigs took the lead in the bottom of the first on a Russ Canzler double, the Pawtucket offense sprung to life.
Tavarez, playing in his second Pawtucket game, singled home Jonathan Roof, who had blooped a double to right. In the fourth, Chris Marrero doubled and was driven home by Garin Cecchini to give the PawSox a 2-1 lead.
Lehigh Valley knotted the game in the top of the fifth when Tyler Pastornicky singled to right field and plated Chase d'Arnaud all the way from first.
The PawSox (56-83) seized the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth; Deven Marrero walked to lead off the inning before Marco Hernandez singled. Carlos Rivero singled to score Marrero before Chris Marrero plated Hernandez by grounding into a double play.
Pawtucket added another run in the sixth on Marco Hernandez's single to left and led 5-2. Robby Scott, who worked around a hit in the seventh, surrendered a game-tying, three-run home run to Tommy Joseph in the eighth. Jorge Marban got the last two outs of the eighth and earned the dramatic win in the ninth.
The Sox (54-83) will be back at McCoy Thursday night at 7:05 for the first of a two-game series with Rochester. Lefthander Edwin Escobar (2-3, 5.36) takes the mound and will be opposed by Rochester lefty Logan Darnell (5-1, 2.84).
