Knights Snub Wolves, 3-1
January 6, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights started the new year the way the ended the old one-with a win. The Knights got three first period goals and rode the strong goaltending of Brent Krahn to a 3-1 win over the Chicago Wolves on Friday night at the Civic Auditorium.
Chicago had two early powerplays and outshot the Knights 5-0 before the game was ten minutes old. Krahn was sturdy, turning aside each attempt to keep the game scoreless.
The Knights took the lead at 13:03 of the first period when Zenith Komarniski popped a bouncing puck over the shoulder of goalie Steve Shields for his second goal of the year. Komarniski was playing in his first game since returning to the Knights from the Spengler Cup tournament in Switzerland.
Just 2:22 later, the Knights doubled their lead when Warren Peters tipped in a shot by Mark Giordano for his eighth goal of the year. The assist gave Giordano points in four straight games.
He wasn't done there. While on the powerplay, Carsen Germyn set up Giordano in the slot. Giordano blew a slap shot under Shields for his ninth goal of the season. The Knights scored all three goals in a span of 4:30.
Justin Morrison of Chicago broke up Krahn's shutout bid when he finished a three-on-one by burying a pass from Pat Dwyer at 12:05 of the second period. It was the only daylight the Wolves would see.
Krahn made 29 saves to pick up the win, his ninth of the season and second straight.
The Knights are now 16-14-1-7. They continue the three-in-three weekend on Saturday night when they visit the Milwaukee Admirals at 7:30 p.m. They'll finish the weekend on Sunday at Chicago for a 5:00 p.m. face-off. Both games can be heard on 1420 KOTK and on the internet at omahaaksarbenknights.com. The games can also be seen on-line by clicking on the link to B2 Networks on the web site.
