Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH -- Special teams ruled the ice surface on Friday night as the Barons scored two power play goals and added a short-handed tally for a 4-1 win over Milwaukee. Nolan Schaefer earned the win coming within 5:55 of registering his third consecutive shut out on home ice.
Scoring his first goal on home ice since November 20th Tom Cavanagh gave the Barons a 1-0 lead after the first period of play. Mike Iggulden and Shane Joseph shared assists on the goal with a beautiful pass play in front of the Milwaukee net. The goal was scored on the game's first power play chance of the night. Pekka Rinne of Milwaukee and the Barons Nolan Schaefer made their third appearance in as many games against the opposition. Cleveland out-shot the Admirals 9-8 through the opening twenty minutes of action.
Special teams ruled the night with the Barons extending their lead to 3-0 with a power play and short-handed goal. Steve Bernier extended his point streak to six games scoring with a two-man advantage giving the Barons a 2-0 lead at the 16:10 mark. Garrett Stafford, who assisted on Bernier's goal along with Mike Iggulden, scored his second short-handed goal of the season for a 3-0 lead with 47-seconds remaining in the period. Tomas Plihal and Brad Staubitz assisted on Stafford's goal. Both teams registered seven shots-on-goal in the period.
The teams exchanged goals in the third period as the Barons earned their third consecutive win on home ice with a 4-1 decision over Milwaukee. Greg Zanon trimmed the Barons lead to 2-goals scoring a power play marker for the Admirals at the 14:05 point. The Barons answered quickly with their only even strength goal of the night from Craig Valette scoring his third of the season with 3:43 left in regulation time. Nolan Schaefer shut down the Admirals the rest of the way preserving the victory. The goal scored by Zanon snapped a home ice shut out streak for Schaefer of more than 186 minutes of play.
Tomorrow afternoon at 1 O'clock the Barons will host the Peoria Rivermen for a Barons Kids' Day Matinee. The game is the second of three consecutive at home on the weekend for the Barons, who host Manitoba on Sunday at 5pm. Tickets for both games are available at the Quicken Loans Arena Box Office, including the Barons Family Fun Pack. The Fun Pack includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $40.
