Charlotte Knights News Release
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - For the second straight game, the Charlotte Knights couldn't produce a run as they fell to the Indianapolis Indians 4-0 in the finale of their three-game series on Thursday night at Victory Field.
Making his second start on the mound for the Knights, Odrisamer Despaigne was solid as neither pitcher team put a runner on base over the first two innings.
But in the third, Jason Martin put Indianapolis in front with a solo home run to right off Despaigne.
Two more runs in the third put the Indians up 3-0, and that would be more than enough to win. In his longest outing with the Knights, Despaigne (L, 3-3) gave up three earned runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 6.0 innings, but he was saddled with the loss.
Indianapolis starter Pedro Vasquez (W, 1-1) held the Knights to just one hit and one walk over his 6.0 innings. Reliever Brandon Waddell worked into a jam in the eighth as the Knights loaded the bases with two walks and an infield single.
Leading 3-0 with two outs in the eighth, Dovydas Neverauskas entered with the bases loaded and induced a pop up from Danny Mendick to strand the runners and keep the Indians in front.
Knights reliever Matt Tomshaw gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth, and that would finish the scoring on the night as Charlotte was shut out for the second consecutive night.
Joel Booker produced both hits for Charlotte, a pair of infield singles, in the final meeting between the Knights and Indians this season.
The Knights continue their road trip with the first of three games against the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Justin Nicolino (2-1, 5.31) is set to start for the Knights. Pre-game radio coverage of the 7:05 p.m. game is set for 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
