Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Jason Martin launched a solo home run and four Indians pitchers combined on a two-hitter as Indy blanked Charlotte for a second consecutive night on Thursday, 4-0. The win was Indy's 30th of the season and gave them six straight series victories.
Indianapolis (30-20) seized the lead in the third on Martin's 422-foot blast off the right field concourse. The Tribe then added two more runs in the fifth on four straight two-out singles, with Martin again providing the burst. He slashed a single to right and took third on a Trayvon Robinson knock. Steven Baron and Ke'Bryan Hayes followed suit with run-scoring base hits.
Pedro Vasquez (W, 1-1) cruised with the run support. The right-hander, making his second career Triple-A appearance and first start with Indy, faced one over the minimum in his 6.0 scoreless frames. He surrendered a two-out infield single to Joel Booker in the third and erased the only walk he issued on a double play turned by Kevin Kramer in the sixth. He finished with seven of Indy's dozen strikeouts.
Kramer tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out single to plate Eric Wood from second base.
Brandon Waddell earned his league-leading seventh hold by recording five outs. Dovydas Neverauskas inherited a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retired Danny Mendick on a popout to third. Jake Brentz finished the shutout in style by striking out the side in the ninth.
Odrisamer Despaigne (L, 3-3), who beat the Tribe twice already this season while pitching for Louisville, gave up three runs on six hits over 6.0 frames while suffering the loss.
Charlotte (28-23) continued its struggles in the Circle City; the win for Indy was its 17th in the last 20 meetings between the two teams at Victory Field. Indy won seven of the 10 matchups against the Knights this season.
The Indians welcome Gwinnett to Victory Field on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. ET. Right-hander Luis Escobar (0-0, 2.89) will start against Stripers righty Bryse Wilson (3-4, 4.38).
