Charlotte Knights News Release

(PAWTUCKET, RI) - The Charlotte Knights scored seven runs on five home runs behind a dazzling performance by RHP Terance Marin in his Triple-A debut to top the Pawtucket Red Sox 7-2 at McCoy Stadium on Monday night.

Marin - who began the season on loan to the Mexican League's Toros de Tijuana - was stellar in his Knights and Triple-A debut, spinning six scoreless innings of five-hit baseball while striking out three. The Modesto, California native would go on to earn the win in his first Triple-A start.

Jason Coats would give the Knights an early lead with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning off of Pawtucket starter LHP Brian Johnson.

Johnson would settle down and not allow another run over his 5.2 innings pitched, but the left-hander would be saddled with his fourth loss of the season.

The Knights would not score again until the seventh inning, when Trayce Thompson homered off of RHP Miguel Celestino - a solo shot to put Charlotte ahead 3-0.

After a Neftali Soto single, Kevan Smith joined the home run show, launching his third longball of the season and giving the Knights a 5-0 advantage.

Coats would push the Knights lead to 6-0 with his second home run of the game - and sixth of the season - a solo shot off of RHP Dayan Diaz in the top of the eighth inning.

The PawSox would end the shutout-bid in the bottom of the eighth when Travis Shaw came up with a bases-loaded single off of RHP Miguel Chalas to score Jackie Bradley Jr. RHP Maikel Cleto would relieve Chalas with two outs and the bases loaded, but Humberto Quintero would cut the Knights lead to 6-2 with an RBI-single before Cleto struck out Sean Coyle to end the inning.

Trayce Thompson would then lead-off the top of the ninth inning with his second home run of the night - the fifth Charlotte homer of the game - to give the Knights a 7-2 lead. Monday marked the first time that two Knights players had multi-homer performances in the same game since May 2, 2011 when Gookie Dawkins and Eduardo Escobar accomplished the feat against the Columbus Clippers.

Cleto would then finish off the PawSox in the bottom half of the frame to seal the victory for the Knights in game one of the three-game series.

The Knights will send RHP Shawn Haviland to the mound in game two against the PawSox on Tuesday night as he faces-off against Red Sox top-prospect LHP Henry Owens. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on the Knights flagship station ESPN 730 AM.
