Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Indians starter Adrian Sampson has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 1-8. The right-hander, who also won the award last month (May 5), took home this week's honors with a 2-0 record, 0.66 ERA (1 ER/13.2 IP) and 14 strikeouts over his two starts against Buffalo and Lehigh Valley.
He is the first Tribe pitcher to win the award twice in the same season since left-hander Justin Wilson in 2012.
Sampson dominated through both outings during the week, beginning with 6 2-3 innings of one-run ball on June 2 against the Bisons. The starter walked one, struck out a career high-tying eight and allowed his lone run on a solo shot to Victory Field's all-time hits leader, Matt Hague, in the gem.
Following the home run in the top of the third, Sampson dialed in to retire 12 of 14 batters with just one single. He concluded the strong showing with 70 of his season-high 106 pitches going for strikes, and won a fifth straight decision for just the second time in his Minor League career.
Five days later at Lehigh Valley, Sampson was even more impressive.
Pitching at Coca-Cola Park - a venue in which the Indians had triumphed only 13 times in eight seasons - Sampson blanked the IronPigs over seven innings in an eventual 5-2 victory. The 23 year old captained the series-clinching win by facing just three batters above the minimum with one walk and three scattered hits, and improved his league-leading strikeout total to 67 with six punchouts in the masterpiece.
Including the two starts, Sampson has rebounded from a 0-3 record in April to win a career-high six straight decisions since May 1. He is 6-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 12 total outings this season and ranks second in the IL in innings pitched (73 2-3), tied for second in wins and eighth in ERA.
The Tribe now features both a two-time IL Pitcher of the Week in Sampson and the league's May Player of the Month in top prospect Alen Hanson.
