Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- On the mound and at the plate, Laz Rivera played the hero for the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night.
Rivera (1-0, 5.06) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th inning and drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to lead the Knights to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Durham Bulls in 10 innings on Thursday night from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. Rivera was the winning pitcher, who also drove home the winning run -- an amazing feat for the infielder.
With the game tied at 3-3, Rivera pitched a perfect top of the 10th inning and put himself in line for a win. In the bottom of the inning, Nate Mondou started at second base and Erik González dropped down a perfect bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Enter Laz Rivera.
On a 3-1 count from Durham pitcher Carlos Garcia (2-3, 4.15), Rivera ripped a deep shot into left field to end the game for the Knights.
The Knights also received home runs in Thursday's game from González, his fifth, and Carlos Pérez, his 12th of the year. González led the charge against the Bulls with three hits in the game.
LHP Garrett Davila started Thursday's game for the Knights and allowed two runs on three hits over 3.1 innings pitched. He walked four batters and fanned another four. Out of the bullpen, five Charlotte pitchers held the Bulls to just one run over the final 6.2 innings.
The two teams will continue the six-game series on Friday night from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. First pitch is set for 7:04 p.m. and gates will open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night at Truist Field.
