Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
Bryan Richardson extended his goal-scoring streak to six games and Jeff Blair made 23 saves as the Baton Rouge Kingfish knocked off the Louisiana IceGators, 6-5.
Marquis Mathieu energized a quite game at the 11:36 mark of the first period as he punched the puck past Frederic Cloutier on the power play. Steve Cheredaryk added an assist on the goal.
The lead lasted just 9 seconds as Bobby Brown answered off a pass from Shawn McNeil. J.P. Morin also tallied an assist on the play.
Joe Guenther regained the lead for the Kingfish just 45 seconds later as he tipped a Bryan Richardson pass back in behind Cloutier. Clark Jones added an assist on the goal as well.
Louisiana used a power play goal to tie the game up before the end of the first period of play. Kevin Mitchell and Bobby Brown set up Nathan Rempel at the 17:34 mark of the opening stanza.
Early in the second, the Kingfish opened up a two-goal lead as Joe Guenther picked up a loose puck in the slot and slid it behind Cloutier at the 3:11 mark of the second period. Cheredaryk and Forrest Gore added the assists on the goal.
Bryan Richardson extended the lead to two as he picked up a rebound and buried it behind Cloutier about two minutes later. Trevor Demmans and Guenther added the assists on the power play goal. With the goal, Richardson has now picked up at least one goal in each of the Kingfish's last six games, tying a season high in the ECHL.
At the 7:44 mark, Mitchell reduced the Kingfish lead to one as he fired a shot through traffic in front of the net that beat Blair. Daniel Goneau and Bruce Richardson added the assists on the power play goal.
Ryan Trsek cleaned up the garbage in front of the net as he flipped a loose puck in the slot over Cloutier's shoulder to regain the two-goal lead for the Kingfish. Glen Crawford and Cheredaryk added the assists on the goal at the 8:16 mark.
The IceGators fought back as Nathan Rempel scored the unassisted goal as he beat Blair on a break away at the 11:33 mark of the second.
Dennis Shiryaev tied the game at five with less than two minutes to play. Bruce Richardson took a pass from Goneau and found Shiryaev who beat Blair.
Cheredaryk broke the five all tie with four and a half minutes to play in the contest as he beat Cloutier on a slap-shot from the point. Bryan Richardson picked up a loose puck in the corner and fed a wide-open Cheredaryk at the point.
Home ice is still key in the season series with the IceGators as each team has two wins, both on home ice. Special teams played a key role in the contest as the Kingfish went 2-4 on the power play; Louisiana went 2-3 on the man advantage.
