San Diego Gulls News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- It's usually the Long Beach Ice Dogs who need to make up ground on the San Diego Gulls, but tonight it's the other way around. With a win tonight, the Gulls can pull within one point of the third-place Ice Dogs and get back to the .500 mark.

San Diego is coming off an impressive 2-0 win over the high-flying Idaho Steelheads Monday night. It was a scoreless duel for two periods, before R.J. Enga broke the deadlock six minutes into the final frame. The Gulls arguably played their best game defensively, and skated with the Steelheads, who came into the game unbeaten in nine, stride for stride. Mark Pederson added a late empty-netter to seal the victory.

The Blue and Orange look to carry its momentum tonight in Long Beach. San Diego comes into action in fourth place, three points behind Long Beach. Even with the blanking over Idaho Monday night, the Gulls' offense continues to struggle. They have only scored 10 goals in the last seven games, and one of those was Pederson's empty net goal. San Diego has tallied more than once (never more than twice) in two of 21 periods during the same span.

Long Beach has won four of its last five games and comes into tonight's game with 22 points, six behind the second-place Bakersfield Condors. San Diego nemesis Chris Kenady leads the Dogs' attack with 26 points, third in the West Coast Hockey League. Kenady is the league-leader with 14 goals, two of which have come against the Gulls. He also leads the league with a +12. Chris Peyton is second among all blue liners with 17 points, five goals and 12 assists.

The Gulls and Ice Dogs have squared off three times so far this season with San Diego holding a 2-1 series edge. San Diego swept Long Beach during opening weekend, with Long Beach coming back on Oct. 26. The Blue and Orange are 2-6 in its last eight meetings at the Long Beach Arena.

After tonight, San Diego opens a three-game homestand against Anchorage, Fresno and Bakersfield respectively. Friday and Saturday's game is at 7 p.m. and Sunday's is at 5 p.m. Friday will be SeaWorld Night. Saturday night the first 5,000 fans will receive a Gulls hockey puck, presented by PennySaver. Sunday evening "Skate with the Gulls" will be held immediately following the game. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
