Peoria Chiefs News Release
May 30, 2007 - In a driving rain, Tyler Johnson made a game-saving catch of Blake Lalli's deep drive to right center, to preserve a 12-7 Kernels win over the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The game saw the Kernels surge to a 7-0 lead after two innings with the big blow being a Hank Conger opposite field grand slam in the bottom of the second inning off Peoria starter Alex Maestri (3-3). Conger finished the night 2-4 with a double and 5 RBI. It was the first grand slam by a Kernel this season.
Matt Sweeney was 4 for 5 with three doubles and 2 RBI and Stantrel Smith was 2-5 with two triples and a RBI.
The lead was more than enough for Kernels starter Sean O'Sullivan (4-3) who pitched 6-2/3 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
The game took an interesting turn in the bottom of the eighth inning as Peoria manager Ryne Sandberg was ejected after arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire during a pitching change.
Sandberg's ejection seemed to fire up the Chiefs as they used five hits and two Kernel errors to score five unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning off Blake Holler to make the score 12-7 Kernels. Felipe Arrendondo came on to relieve Holler and completed his warm-up tosses in a light rain.
The skies opened up just as Arrendondo was delivering a pitch to Blake Lalli, who hit a deep drive to right center that Tyler Johnson ran down to end the game.
Game three of this four game series is Thursday night at 6:30 pm. It will be a 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday where fans can get cups of beer or soda from the Kernels beverage center for just a buck. Slushies will be one dollar and bottled soda and water will be two bucks.
Gates open at 5:30 pm and tickets are available by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Thursday.
