Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
For the second game in a row, the Cedar Rapids Kernels hit three home runs, this time at friendly Veterans Memorial Stadium, and scored seven runs in the seventh inning to beat Peoria, 9-3.
Matt Sweeney started the home run parade in the bottom of the fourth as he laced a laser beam over the right field wall. The homer was his fourth of the season and tied the score at 2-2.
Tyler Johnson hit his fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the seventh and P.J. Phillips hit his fourth of the year, a solo shot, also in the bottom of the seventh.
The Kernels broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the seventh with a seven run outburst started by Mark Trumbo's bases loaded triple to make the score 5-2 Kernels. Every Kernel starter had at least one hit as the Kernels had 14 on the night.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Haynes allowed two runs on seven hits over four innings of work. He walked two but struck out seven. Barret Browning (2-1) threw three perfect innings with two strikeouts to get the win.
Chris Pettit was 1 for 3 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Pettit also drew two walks.
Peoria reliever Al Albuquerque (1-3) gave up seven runs and seven hits over 1-2/3 innings to take the loss.
With the win, the Kernels improve to 26-21 and Peoria falls to 25-26.
The Kernels and Chiefs play game two of their four game series on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium on a Linn County State Bank Thousand Dollar Wednesday. Gates open at 5:30 pm as the first 1,000 fans through the gates receive an envelope and one lucky fan will find out that theirs contains $1,000. Sean O'Sullivan is scheduled to start for the Kernels as first pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
