Ryan Norwood Returns to Chiefs from Daytona

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that first baseman Ryan Norwood will join the Chiefs roster after beginning the season in Daytona. Norwood was a Midwest League All-Star in 2006 after missing the entire 2005 season with an ankle injury.

Norwood, who turned 24 in February, appeared in 35 games this season with Daytona of the High-A Florida State League. In those 35 games, Norwood hit .217 with two doubles, no homers, 10 runs scored and 15 RBI. His playing time dropped last week when the Cubs returned AA first baseman Brian Dopirak to Daytona. After a rough start in April, Norwood hit .308 in May including a season best 3-hit game at Sarasota on May 21st. He had an 8-game hit streak end in the last game he played for Daytona on May 23rd when he was 0-for-2.

Norwood missed the 2005 season with an ankle injury he suffered during an April exhibition game against Bradley University at O'Brien Field. He returned in 2006 to lead the Midwest League with 134 games played and 155 hits. He finished the season with a .307 batting average while hitting 15 home runs with 69 RBI and 28 doubles and was selected as a Midwest League midseason All-Star. Norwood was originally a 9th round draft pick of the Cubs in 2004 from East Carolina University. After being drafted in 2004, Norwood joined the short-season affiliate for the Cubs in Boise and was selected as a Northwest League All-Star. He finished his debut season with a .296 average to go along with 9 home runs and 53 RBI. Ryan also hit the last walk-off home run at O'Brien Field on May 7th last year against Lansing in a game started by a rehabbing Kerry Wood. With the game tied 3-3 in the 10th inning, Norwood homered to give the Chiefs the win. In his first game as a Chief in April of 2006, Ryan went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
