Swing Rally Past Lumberkings

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

A pair of 19-year-old newcomers helped the Swing of the Quad Cities to a 6-4 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field. Tommy Pham and Wilmer Alvarado - who joined the Swing from Extended Spring Training on Tuesday - each had a hand in a pair of early rallies to grab the lead.

Quad Cities (28-24) reached their magic number of six in the win, improving to 14-0 when scoring six or more runs in a ballgame. Clinton (31-19) still holds a four-game lead over the Swing for the final first-half playoff spot in the Midwest League's Western Division with 17 games remaining until the All-Star break.

The game started with a flurry of action, as each team scored two runs in the first inning.

Pham started the rally in the top of the first, singling up the middle before being replaced at first base on a fielder's choice by Brandon Buckman. Chris Grossman came to the plate next, eventually turning on a 3-2 pitch and driving it down the left field line and out of the yard for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame Clinton got even on a pair of unearned runs. With one out and a man on first Brandon Dickson fielded a comebacker to the mound, but his throw to second sailed into center field and resulted in runners at second and third. That set the stage for Chad Tracy to drive in a pair of runs with a single up the middle, evening the score while raising his RBI total to 40.

The deadlock held until the top of the fourth, when the Swing seized the lead for good. Alvarado led off with a double down the third base line and moved to third on a single by Luke Gorsett. Alvarado scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball, and later in the frame three consecutive run-scoring at-bats extended the advantage.

With men at the corners, Christian Lopez slugged a double off the wall in left that plated Gorsett and advanced Daryl Jones to third. Pham followed with a groundout that scored Jones, and one batter later Buckman singled home Gorsett for his 42nd RBI of the year and a 6-2 lead.

After scoring once in the seventh, Clinton threatened to close the gap in the eighth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, however, reliever Kyle Mura was able to limit the damage. After inducing a pop-out to shallow right that held the runners, Mura struck out the next batter swinging, but a passed ball allowed a run to score as everybody advanced 90 feet. A groundout to short would subsequently end the inning, stranding a pair in scoring position to preserve the 6-4 Swing lead.

Brandon Dickson (7-3) earned his team-leading seventh win with five strong innings of work. The righty from Marbury, Alabama, allowed two runs - none earned - on five hits while fanning two and walking one. Kenny Maiques (11) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save, striking out two before a diving play by Christian Lopez at second took care of the final out of the game.
