Kernels win fourth in a row, finish homestand at 6-2

July 6, 2006 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (9-6, 40-45) won their fourth game in a row, 3-2, over the Burlington Bees (4-11) in front of 2,708 fans on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It is the first time this season they have swept a series and finished this eight game homestand at 6-2.

The Kernels struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Flint Wipke reached on a throwing error and moved to third on a Jordan Renz single. Marco Albano grounded out to short, allowing Wipke to score from third. Mark Trumbo stroked one of his two doubles to left field, scoring Renz and then scored on an RBI single by Dallas Morris.

The Bees made the score 3-2 as an errant throw by catcher Brett Martinez. Jose Duarte scored on an infield groundout two plays later.

Tommy Mendoza (6-5) threw 7-2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out five. He gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the second to Jeff Howell. Tim Mattison came on in the bottom of the eighth and got Mario Lisson to ground out to short.

Ryan Aldridge came on for the 34th time this season to pitch the ninth and nearly gave up the game tying run. With one out, Jeff Howell slashed a deep fly ball to right that just caught the top of the fence and stayed in play for a double. Aldridge got Carlos Arroyo to ground out to short and then struck out Brady Everett to end the game and pick up his 16th save of the season.

Burlington starter Erik Cordier (0-1) took the loss in his first start for the Bees

Mark Trumbo and Jordan Renz each had two hits for the Kernels. Marco Albano, Dallas Morris and Trumbo each had an RBI.
