Dayton Dragons News Release

Geneva, IL - With a win in the finale of the four game series with the Kane County Cougars (9-6, 49-35), the 2006 Dayton Dragons (7-8, 42-43) would do something the previous six Dragons teams had been unable to do; win back-to-back games at Elfstrom Stadium. Dayton snapped a nine game losing streak with Wednesday's 4-1 win over Kane County. The Dragons tied the game with a pair in dramatic fashion with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning, but would ultimately fall short losing 4-3 in 15 innings.

Travis Wood (ND) got the start for the Dragons and looked to improve on his last outing, a 1.1 inning seven hit, seven run performance at Cedar Rapids, which resulted in the first loss of the 2006 season and the first in his professional career. The Cougars picked up single runs in each of the first two innings off Wood. An unearned run in the top half of the first put the Cougars up 1-0. Justin Sellers led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Wood's errant pick off throw. Sellers came home on a SAC fly to right from Jeff Baisley for a 1-0 lead. Jose Pineda led off the second inning for Kane County with a triple and scored on a two out squeeze bunt by Wes Long to put KC up 2-0. An RBI double in the fifth by Baisley off Wood made it 3-0 Cougars.

Wood was much improved giving up three runs, two earned in 7.0 innings of work on the night. The southpaw scattered seven hits and struck out eight while hitting one Cougars batter.

Ron Madej (ND) looked good early surrendering just a pair of hits to Dayton through the first five innings. In the fourth and fifth inning the Dragons had multiple runners on board courtesy of Madej, who walked Adam Rosales and hit Jay Bruce with a pitch in the fourth and issued back-to-back walks in the fifth inning to Mike Griffin and Mike DeJesus. The lone run allowed by Madej was an unearned tally in the top half of the sixth inning.

With Habelito Hernandez at third and two down, wild pitch thrown on strike three to Eric Eymann allowed Eymann to reach and got Hernandez home and the Dragons were on the board, trailing 3-1.

The Dragons clawed back off Jeff Gray (ND) with a pair of runs in the ninth inning, on two occasions facing two strikes and two outs. Gray hit Craig Tatum with a pitch with one down and walked DeJesus with two out to extend the inning for Griffin who delivered an RBI single to center scoring Tatum to cut the lead to 3-2. Rosales came up with the tying run at second and came through with a base hit to right center scoring DeJesus ahead of Wes Long's throw to tie the game at 3-3.

The game went into extra innings as the Cougars were unable to get the winning run home in the ninth. After five full innings of scoreless extra innings and a top of the 15th inning that did not see a Dragons run come home, Kane County picked up the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. Baisley led off the inning with a double and moved to third on the most bizarre hit of the 2006 season. The Dragons were attempting to intentionally walk Pineda with one down in the 15th. Damian Ursin (LP, 0-1) tossed the first offering a little to close to the plate and Pineda laced it into right field for a single to put runners at first and third. Steve Kleen picked up the game winning hit following the botched walk with a single to center that scored Baisley from third.

The Dragons return to Fifth Third Field on Friday night and open up a four game series with the Swing of the Quad Cities. Friday night's game will begin at 7:05 PM and will be televised in the Miami Valley on Dragons Television Channel 25, with Mike Vander Wood and Reds Hall of Famer Tom Browning calling the action. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live with the Dragons Pre Game Show beginning at 6:30 PM. RHP Carlos Fisher (7-4, 3.21 ERA) will make the start for Dayton in the opening game of the series. All Dragons games in 2006 can also be heard live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com.
