Burlington Bees News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA (July 6, 2006) The Cedar Rapids Kernels (9-6, 40-45) scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and made them hold up for a 3-2 win over the Burlington Bees (4-11, 39-43) at Veterans Memorial Stadium last night. The win gives the Kernels a sweep of the four-game series and extends the Bees losing streak to six. The Kernels now lead the season series 6-5.

Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza (6-5) won his fifth consecutive decision, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 7.2 innings. Jeff Howell led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left. Howell is the third player to homer in consecutive games this season and the Bees have now had a home run in seven of their last eight games. Jose Duarte led off the top of the third with his second hit, went to third on an errant pick-off attempt by catcher Brett Martinez, and scored on a groundout by Mario Lisson. After Duarte's single, Mendoza retired the next twelve in a row before Howell led off the top of the seventh with a single to center. Mendoza came out after a two-out walk to Jeremy Jirschele in the eighth. Tim Mattison got Lisson to groundout to end the inning.

Bees' starter Erik Cordier (0-1) worked six innings in his Midwest League debut and was the victim of a defensive letdown in the second. Flint Wipke led off with a routine bouncing ball to shortstop, but Chris McConnell airmailed the throw to first and Wipke reached on an error. Jordan Renz followed with a broken bat grounder towards short that hit a spike mark in the dirt and jumped high over McConnell's right shoulder and into centerfield for a hit. Wipke advanced to third and Renz got to second when McConnell cut off the throw from the outfield, but threw high to second. Wipke scored on a groundout by Marc Albano. Mark Trumbo lined a douned a double off the base of the wall in left to drive in Renz for a 2-1 Kernels lead. Dallas Morris followed with a base hit to center to drive in Trumbo and complete the rally before Cordier got the final two outs. Cordier allowed four hits and one walk while striking out one through six. Yovany Damico, Eliezer Garcia, and Chris Hayes combined to pitch a scoreless seventh with Hayes recording a strikeout and a flyout to strand the bases loaded. Hayes also pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Bees came just short of tying the game in the ninth against Kernels' closer Ryan Aldridge. With one out, Howell hit a line drive that hit off the 325 marker on the wall down the right field line, missing a game-tying home run by less than six inches. Howell went to third on a bounce out, but Aldridge notched his 16th save by catching Brady Everett looking at strike three to end the game. Aldridge earned a win last night in a one-run win for the Kernels.

The Bees return home to Community Field tomorrow night to start a four-game series against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays. RH Mario Santiago (0-1, 9.00) will start for the Bees against RH Matt Walker (2-2, 1.54) for the Rays. The gates open at 6:00 for a T-G-I Bud Friday and Jimmy Buffett night featuring specials on Cheeseburgers in Paradise and frozen margaritas prepared by Fun City. After the game, there will be a cheeseburger eating contest sponsored by Mannâ's McDonalds. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
