July 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

LANSING - For the first time since 2002 the Whitecaps have won eight games in a row. West Michigan held on for a 3-2 victory in Lansing to complete a four game sweep of the Lugnuts.

It is the first time in team history that the Whitecaps have swept back-to-back four game series.

West Michigan has also tied a team record with nine consecutive road victories. Such a streak has occurred only two other times in team history: July 26-August 13, 1996 and April 26-May 18, 1997.

The last eight game winning streak was May 12-20, 2002.

Josh Rainwater pitched 6.1 shutout innings as the Whitecaps starter. He allowed just two hits - both doubles to Brian Pettway - and a walk.

The bullpen, however allowed seven hits over the final 2.2 innings as Lansing left eight runners on base starting in the seventh inning.

Anthony Claggett's streak of 17.2 consecutive scoreless innings pitched came to a close when he allowed a run on a one-out single by Anthony Hatch in the eighth to end the shutout bid. Claggett had made 15 straight scoreless appearances for the Whitecaps prior to Thursday.

Closer Orlando Perdomo allowed a run on a one-out single by Luke Hetherington in the bottom of the ninth as the Lugnuts pulled to within one at 3-2. Perdomo held on for his 20th save of the season.

Three consecutive hits put the Whitecaps on top in the fourth inning against Sean Stidfole. Perdo Cotto doubled, followed by a Cameron Maybin RBI single and a Mike Hernandez RBI double.

The third West Michigan run came in the seventh when Cory Middleton doubled, followed by a Will Rhymes bunt that was thrown over the first baseman and down the right field line by reliever Bred Mumma. Middleton scored from second on the play.
