Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - In the ongoing saga of today's Dayton Dragons roster moves, it turns out that Cincinnati Reds RHP Elizardo Ramirez will indeed join the active roster, while RHP Justin Mallett has been promoted to high-A Sarasota.
The Cincinnati Reds have assigned Ramirez to the Dragons so the major leaguer can continue to throw on his regular schedule during the Major League All-Star Break. The 23-year-old right-hander is expected to pitch on Monday evening when the Dayton Dragons host the Swing of the Quad Cities at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
Ramirez, who is known to his Cincinnati teammates as "E-Z", began the 2006 season with Louisville before being promoted to Cincinnati in late April. In 14 games with the big league club, Ramirez has posted a 3-6 record and a 4.14 ERA. Ramirez was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 1999. Cincinnati acquired the right-hander on August 11, 2004 as the player to be named later along with OF Javon Moran and LHP Joe Wilson in a deal that sent RHP Cory Lidle to Philadelphia. Ramirez has a career 3-9 record and 5.06 ERA in 27 major league games.
Ramirez will be taking the roster spot of RHP Justin Mallett who has been promoted to the high-A Sarasota Reds of the Florida State League. The 6'6", 212 pound pitcher out of East St. Louis, Illinois was 0-3 with 3 saves and a 4.02 ERA in 11 games for Dayton this season.
