Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts threatened seveal times in the final three innings, but could not overcome a three run deficit as the West Michigan Whitecaps beat Lansing 3-2. The win completed the series sweep for the Whitecaps.

West Michigan took the lead in the fourth inning when Cameron Maybin singled into center field to plate Pedro Cotto and make the score 1-0. Michael Hernandez then doubled into the left field corner to score Maybin to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Whitecaps scored another run in the seventh inning when Cory Middleton scored on an error by Lansing pitcher Brad Mumma after William Rhymes was able to beat out an infield single.

Lansing tried to rally in the seventh inning, loading the bases with just one out. However Ricky Steik was able to work out of the jam for the Whitecaps and keep the Lugnuts off of the board.

Anthony Claggett came on in the eighth for the Whitecaps, and Lansing used three singles to score Luke Hetherington to make it 3-1. It was only the second run of the season scored off of Claggett. The Lugnuts would load the bases again in the frame, but could not bring anyone else across the plate.

Lansing put another run on the board in the ninth when Jacob Butler doubled and scored on a Luke Hetherington single to make it 3-2. However Lansing left runners at first and second when the final two outs were recorded by Orlando Perdomo. It was his 20th save of the year.

Josh Rainwater (4-2) got the win for West Michigan, throwing 6 1/3 dominant innings. He allowed just two hits, both to Brian Pettway.

Sean Stidfole (5-4) took a tough luck loss for Lansing, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

Lansing will open a four game series at Wisconsin on Friday night. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. EST.
