South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - Despite playing good baseball to start the second half of the season, the South Bend Silver Hawks found themselves on the wrong end of first place, trailing the West Michigan Whitecaps by two games entering play Thursday night. The Hawks did their part, coming from behind, then losing a three run lead, before defeating the Beloit Snappers 7-6 on a tenth inning solo home run by Will Crouch.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first and 3-1 after two and one half innings, the Silver Hawks jumped ahead for good in the home half of the third. With one out, Leyson Septimo singled and stole second. Ricardo Sosa was hit by Beloit starter Kyle Waldrop's (6-3) pitch, placing runners at first and second. Bryan Byrne (4) came to the plate and placed a Waldrop offering over the right center field fence giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead. In the second inning, Orlando Mercado homered (4) pulling the Hawks within one at 3-2.
South Bend tacked on another run in the sixth. Pedro Ciriaco opened with a base hit, stole second and came home on a Leyson Septimo RBI double.
The Snappers came back in the seventh, scoring three runs on a sacrifice fly, RBI single and fielder's choice, knotting the game at six.
The game went to extra frames and in the tenth, Will Crouch smacked reliever Yohan Pino's delivery over the left field fence for a walk off homer and a split in the series, with a 7-6 win.
The Silver Hawks (44-37, 11-4) hit he road Friday to open a four game series versus the Clinton Lumberkings. The Hawks return home Wednesday, July 12 for a three game series against the Dayton Dragons.
