Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 6-run 7th inning vaulted the Kernels to a 6-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night.
After two scoreless innings, Peoria entered the scoreboard first with a run in the 3rd. Gerwuins Velazco scored on an RBI single by Charlie Tilson. Velazco scored again in the 5th on an RBI single by Jacob Wilson that gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
The Kernels' offense was at a stalemate for a majority of the game, recording just one hit after 6. The offense struck big in the 7th, however. Back to back doubles by Niko Goodrum and Jorge Polanco led off the frame, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Later, Adam Brett Walker hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 2, but Joel Licon and Jonathan Murphy pushed the Kernels forward ultimately.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Licon hit a line drive down the right field line as Travis Harrison and Michael Quesada came across scoring and giving the Kernels a 4-2 lead. The double is Licon's 7th of the season. Murphy recorded two RBI as well a couple pitches later on a single to give the Kernels a 6-2 lead they never relinquished.
Kernels starter Brett Lee exited after 5, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out four. Tim Shibuya followed and threw 2 hitless and scoreless innings. Shibuya (1-0) struck out three while not walking a batter. David Hurlbut pitched the final 2 innings, allowing no hits and no runs.
Peoria starter Chris Perry left after 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three. Perry (1-1) retired 10 batters in a row at one stage in the game and faced the minimum through 5. Brady Adamek threw 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Eight of nine in the Kernels starting lineup recorded one hit each.
