Chiefs Lose 6-2 Friday

Cedar Rapids, IA- Leading 2-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Peoria Chiefs couldn't finish off the sweep of the first-place Cedar Rapids Kernels who plated six quick runs in the home half of the inning for a 6-2 victory. The loss drops the Chiefs to 17-16 in the second half and 55-45 overall heading into a three-game home series against Kane County.

With one on and two outs in the third inning, CJ McElroy singled to center off Brett Lee to move Gerwuins Velazco into scoring position. Charlie Tilson capitalized with a single to right to put the Chiefs on top 1-0. Jacob Wilson drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases but Lee escaped the inning as Jeremy Schaffer grounded into a fielders' choice.

Chris Perry cruised through the first four innings and the Chiefs took advantage of an error to double their lead in the fifth. Velazco reached on an error at shortstop to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout. With two down, Wilson singled to center for a 2-0 Chiefs lead as Velazco scored without a throw.

Perry had retired 13 of 14 batters and not allowed a hit since the second inning as the Chiefs lead 2-0 into the bottom of the seventh. Niko Goodrum led off with a double and scored on a double by Jorge Polanco. Mike Gonzales singled to left and Adam Brett Walker tied the game as his 90th RBI of the season came on a sacrifice fly to center. With two outs and a runner on first, Travis Harrison singled to left and Brady Adamek came out of the Chiefs bullpen to replace Perry. His first pitch hit Michael Quesada to load the bases and Joel Licon doubled down the right-field line for a 4-2 Kernels lead. Jonathan Murphy singled home two more before Adamek struck out Goodrum with the Chiefs down 6-2.

Perry (1-1) allowed four runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. Adamek allowed two runs on three hits over a 1 1/3 innings while walking one, hitting one and striking out two.
