Burlington Bees News Release
Ryan Crowley and Vincent Velasquez exchanged zeroes through seven innings, but the Quad Cities River Bandits scored a run with two outs in the eighth to take the final game of the series on Friday night at Community Field.
It was a true pitcher's duel on Friday, with Velasquez (7-4) allowing two hits in seven innings and Crowley (6-5) tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings. The River Bandits (56-45, 18-14) defeated the Bees (39-59, 13-20) thanks to a heads up base running play by Teoscar Hernandez in the eighth.
Crowley struck out the first two batters of the eighth, but Hernandez reached on a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch to put a man in scoring position with two outs. Austin Elkins hit a high chopper up the middle that was fielded by Cannizaro and delivered to first after Elkins had reached the bag. Hernandez scored all the way from second, taking off for home once he realized Cannizaro's throw was going to second.
The Bees threatened in the ninth against Juan Minaya (4). Minaya walked Wendell Soto to start the frame and with one out, he walked Cannizaro. The right-hander struck out both Wade Hinkle and Michael Bolaski to end the game.
Crowley did not allow a man to reach third base until Hernandez scored in the eighth. The southpaw retired 11 straight batters between the second and sixth. Velasquez was perfect through four innings, but Bolaski reached on an error to start the fifth and Exicardo Cayones broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the inning.
Burlington went 4-5 on the homestand and will now hit the road for a three-game series in Wisconsin. The Bees and Rattlers will take the field at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday evening. You can hear all the action on News Radio 1490 KBUR or gobees.com.
