
Kernels Top Captains, 5-4, in Series Opener

EASTLAKE, Ohio - Cedar Rapids improved to a season-best 20 games over .500 with Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Lake County Captains. The Kernels never trailed and recorded five straight hits to begin the contest.
Keaton Steele (4-3) earned the win. The right-hander retired 11 in a row at one point and allowed three runs on four hits, one walk and hit a batter while striking out four over six innings. Michael Theofanopoulos (7) recorded the hold. Theofanooulos yielded one run, one hit and a walk while striking out one in an inning of relief. Nick Anderson (1) secured the win with the save. Anderson yielded two hits and struck out three over two shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Nick Gordon and Edgar Corcino led the Kernels offense with three hits each. Gordon went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a double while Corcino finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
Cedar Rapids (26-18, 67-47) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with five straight hits in the top of the first. Tanner English recorded the first hit of the game with a single to left. The hit extended English's hitting streak to a personal-best 10 games and also extended his Kernels season-high on-base streak to 21 games. Gordon followed English with a single to right, moving English to second. Corcino put the Kernels up 1-0 with an RBI single to right, scoring English from second. Zack Larson made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single to left field, plating Gordon.
Lake County (20-23, 56-55) countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 2-2. Greg Allen led off the frame with a single to center. Taylor Murphy then doubled to left-center, advancing Allen to third. Anthony Santander cut the Kernels lead in half with an RBI groundout, scoring Allen from third. Bobby Bradley followed Santander with an RBI groundout of his own, bringing in Murphy from third.
Cedar Rapids went back in front of the Captains, 3-2, with a run in the top of the fifth. Gordon reached base with a two-out single before Edgar Corcino brought him in with an RBI double to left-center.
Lake County deadlocked the contest at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Santander started the inning with a one-out walk. Bradley then recorded a ground-rule double down the right field line, advancing Santander to third. Yonathan Mendoza followed Bradley with sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Santander.
The Kernels took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Pat Kelly led off the inning with a single to center. Kelly's single extended his personal-best hitting streak to 10 games. English followed Kelly with a walk, giving the Kernels runners on first and second. Gordon put the Kernels up 5-3 with a two-run double to left-center, plating both Kelly and English.
Steven Patterson's two-out solo home run trimmed the Kernels lead to 5-4. The home run for Patterson was his second of the year.
The Kernels continue the three-game road series v. the Lake County Captains on Wednesday. First pitch in the middle game of the series is at noon. RHP Felix Jorge (5-5, 2.76) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while LHP Justus Sheffield (7-4, 4.05) counters for Lake County.
The Kernels return home on Tuesday, August 18, for the start of a three-game series v. the Kane County Cougars. Tuesday's game is a Twins Tuesday, presented by Great Clips.
