Gomber, Peoria Top Dragons 2-1

Dayton, Ohio-Peoria starting pitcher Austin Gomber struck out nine batters over seven strong innings to take over the league lead in victories as the Chiefs edged the Dragons 2-1 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field. The game was played before a crowd of 7,900.

Gomber (13-3) improved to 12-0 since May 1. He allowed five hits and one walk over his seven innings.

The Chiefs scored both of their runs in the fourth inning with only one ball leaving the infield. A pair of two-out, infield singles brought in runs as Peoria took a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons scored their only run in the fourth inning when Avain Rachal walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Jonathan Reynoso's two-out single to make it 2-1. Over the final five innings, the Dragons advanced only one runner past first base. It came in the sixth when Avain Rachal tripled with two outs, but he was stranded at third.

Dragons starting pitcher Jake Paulson (5-4) pitched well but suffered the loss. Paulson worked six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Brennan Bernardino followed Paulson to the mound and tossed two scoreless innings before Joe Mantoni pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Dragons collected six hits. Reynoso, Rachal, and Shed Long each had two. Rachal's triple was the only extra base hit.

The Dragons (19-25 in the second half; 58-56 overall) host the Chiefs (29-14, 62-49) again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Junior Morillo (3-6, 6.20) will start for Dayton against Peoria's Jack Flaherty (6-1, 2.75).

Notes: Rachal is hitting .524 over a six-game hitting streak, going 11 for 21.
