
Captains Rally Falls Short against Kernels

Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) -The Lake County Captains final matchups of the season against the Western Division of the Midwest League continued on Tuesday night. The Captains twice battled back to tie the game before eventually falling 5-4 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels after stranding the winning runs on base in the final inning.
Cedar Rapids jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. The first five batters all singled off of Captains' starter Sean Brady. Tanner English and Nick Gordon both singled to start the game. Both would come around to score for a 2-0 Kernels lead.
The Captains wasted no time tying the game up. Greg Allen singled to start the bottom of the first inning. He would then move to third base on Taylor Murphy's double to leftfield. Anthony Santander's RBI groundout to first would score Allen to cut the deficit to just a run. Bobby Bradley then tied the game with an RBI groundout to first to score Murphy for a 2-2 game.
The Kernels took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs Gordon singled. Edgar Corcino would then deliver with a two out bloop double to leftfield to score Gordon from first to put the Kernels up 3-2.
Lake County would tie the game again in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Santander was hit by a pitch. He would then move to third on Bobby Bradley's ground rule double to rightfield. Santader would come into score on Yonathan Mendoza's RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the seventh inning the Kernels took the lead for good. Pat Kelly and Tanner English singled and walked to start the inning. Gordon followed with a double to righfield to clear the bases scoring Kelly and Tanner for a 5-3 lead.
The Captains would cut the deficit to just a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs Steven Patterson connected on a solo homerun, his second of the season to cut the Kernels lead to 5-4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bobby Ison singled to start the inning. Ordomar Valdez then laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the play the throw to first by Kernels' reliever Nick Anderson bounced off Rafael Valera for a throwing error. The error allowed Ison to go to third and put Valdez on first. After a foul out, Valdez stole second putting the tying run a third and winning run at second. The Captains would strand both runners on base to end the game.
Sean Brady started and took a no decision in 6.0 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs on 9 hits. Brady did not walk a batter and struck out 5. Luke Eubank (2-2) took the loss in 2.0 innings of relief. He allowed 2 earned runs on 2 hits. Eubank walked 2 and struck out 2. David Speer worked a perfect inning of relief. He struck out 1.
