Cougars Jump Out With Five-Run First Inning

August 11, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

Geneva, Illinois - Kane County capitalized on two Loons' errors in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead that morphed into a 9-1 win on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Loons (56-56; 18-26) have committed eight errors in their last three games. Kane County (68-44; 32-12) take the first game in the series to maintain the best second-half record in the Midwest League.

After the Loons stranded runners on first and second in the first inning, Kane County answered in-kind and placed its first two hitters aboard with no outs.

Three-hole hitter Marty Herum sent a high hopper to Loons' shortstop Nick Dean, who misjudged the head-high bounce and the ball tipped off and over his glove into left field. The error translated into a run for Kane County as the Loons missed a chance to turn a potentially game-altering double play.

The Loons could not recover. After a fielder's choice led to another Kane County run and a 2-0 lead, the Cougars rattled off three straight hits against right-handed starter Isaac Anderson (L, 1-2). With the bases loaded and the score 3-0, Willie Calhoun botched a ground ball at second base and another runner crossed on the Loons' second miscue of the frame.

When the damage was done, Kane County batted around in the first inning and held a 5-0 lead. Anderson exited the game after one inning pitched.

A home run by Colin Bray off Loons' right-hander Cameron Palmer made the score 6-0 in the third. The Loons best chance to cut into the deficit occurred in the fourth.

Dean worked a bases loaded walk with two outs to make the score 6-1, but Michael Ahmed struck out to end the inning and leave the bases packed. The Loons stranded 11 runners on base in the loss.

Kane County polished off the Loons with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth off right-hander James Campbell.

The Loons and Cougars square off for the middle leg of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. EDT. Coverage starts at 7 on ESPN 100.9-FM. After a nine-game road trip, the Loons return to Dow Diamond to meet the Dayton Dragons at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, August 21.

After a league-wide day off on Monday, the Loons return to Dow Diamond to open a six-game homestand on Tuesday, August 4 against the western division. The Beloit Snappers come to town for a 7:05 p.m. EDT first pitch.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
