Road Trip Starts with Shutout Loss

(Bowling Green-KY)- An eighth inning wild pitch scored the only run of the game as the Burlington Bees (51-62) lost the series opener to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (58-56) 1-0 on Tuesday night in Bowling Green.

Both starting pitchers matched each other, throwing six scoreless innings on Tuesday night. The Bees has chances early on Bowling Green starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos. Ayendy Perez led off the game with a single and moved to second on a David Fletcher single. After the next two batters were retired, Perez and Fletcher moved to second and third on a balk but were left stranded when Chirinos struck out Wade Wass to end the frame.

The best chance of the night, for the Bees, came in the third inning. Trevor Gretzky lined a single to center, his first of two hits, giving the Bees a lead off base runner in the top of the third inning. Ayendy Perez smacked his fourth double of the season, placing runners at second and third with nobody out. After David Fletcher was retired on a shallow fly out to left, Tim Arakawa lined into a double play, ending the threat.

Bees' starting pitcher Justin Anderson pitched six innings without allowing a run, giving up just one hit, walking three and striking out six in a no decision. Bowling Green recieved an equally good outing from their starting pitcher, Yonny Chirinos, who threw six shutout innings, allowing six hits, striking out six.

Alex Sole started the bottom of the eighth inning by lacing a single to left. Sole then would move all the way to third on a wild pitch. During Christian Toribio's at-bat, Sole scored on the second wild pitch of the inning, giving the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.

Zach Houchins kept the game alive in the ninth, grounding a two out single to left. Edwin Fierro (2) retired the final hitter, earning the save, sealing the Hot Rods' 1-0 win. Bees' reliever, Jacob Kopra (0-2) was charged with the loss. The Bees and the Hot Rods continue the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 when Austin Robichaux pitches for the Bees agains Bowling Green's Brad Wallace.
