Clinton Homestand Starts with 6-4 Loss to Lugnuts

August 11, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - For the Clinton LumberKings (9-35, 35-78), the series vs. the top offensive team in the league could not have gotten off to a worse start, as the Lansing Lugnuts (24-20, 66-48) plated five runs in the top of the first inning in route to a 6-4 series opening win. Clinton mounted a ninth inning comeback, scored two runs, and brought the winning run to the plate, but Carlos Ramirez (SV, 7) picked up the rare one-out save and closed the door on the rally.

After 110 games, Clinton did not have a starting pitcher that failed to make it out of the first inning. Tuesday night however was the second straight game in which the LumberKings' starter recorded just two outs. Zack Littell retired just two men in the series finale in South Bend, while Ryan Yarbrough (L, 0-1) was only able to get two outs Tuesday night. The first four in the first inning reached and scored, as the Lugnuts sent 11 men to the plate, tallied five hits, and three walks. Pat Peterson came on for Yarbrough and walked in a run before he struck out Richard Urena and ended the inning. Chris Carlson, Urena, D.J. Davis, Ryan McBroom, and Juan Kelly each had a hit in the inning.

Peterson was sensational in relief. The lefty did not allow a run over 4.1 innings and struck out seven, his best outing of the season out of the pen. The Clinton pen combination of Peterson, Hawtin Buchanan, and Thyago Vieira did not allow an earned run over 8.1 innings, while the Lansing bullpen trio of Mark Biggs (W, 4-3), Phil Kish, and Ramirez allowed three runs, two earned, over 4.1 innings. Clinton Hollon came one out shy of qualifying for a victory, as the righty went 4.2 innings and allowed only one unearned run.

Kish, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, returned for the ninth and started the inning with a strikeout. He then walked Austin Cousino, while Gianfranco Wawoe tallied his third hit of the night with a single. Kish then struck out Brock Hebert, but Burt Reynolds reached on an infield single, and Urena's throwing error plated a run. Lansing manager Ken Huckaby then went to Ramirez, who quickly gave up an RBI single to Estarlyn Morales that put the tying runners on base for Joe DeCarlo. But despite two hits earlier in the night, DeCarlo grounded out to the pitcher and ended the game, as Clinton fell to 0-7 vs. the East at home in 2015.

Game two of the series is set for Wednesday night at 6:30 CT at Ashford University Field. Clinton aims to avoid its seventh straight series loss vs. the East. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
