BELOIT, Wisc. - The Beloit Snappers homered three times on Tuesday night to beat the South Bend Cubs by a score of 7-5 in the first game of a three game series.
South Bend got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Matt Rose singled on a ball that was hit right at Beloit's starter, Joey Wagman, and deflected off of his arm, which allowed for Jeffrey Baez to score.
The Snappers answered right back in the bottom half of the first when Max Kuhn hit a solo homer (6) on a fly ball to left field.
Beloit was able to take the lead in the second when they put up a three spot. Tim Proudfoot was able to hit an RBI single on a fly ball to center field, which allowed Iolana Akau to cross the plate to take the lead. Joe Bennie came up huge tonight for the Snappers and started his night with a two RBI double (26) on a line drive to center field, making the score 4-1.
The 2015 Chicago Cubs' first round draft pick, Ian Happ, singled on a line drive to center field that led to Jeffrey Baez scoring, after he stole his 27th base of the year. Happ was able to score after a line drive single to right field by Gioskar Amaya, closing the gap to 4-3.
Beloit added another run in the third when Mikey White singled on a fly ball to center field to bring home Jose Brizuela.
Bennie continued his hot streak by crushing a solo bomb (11) to center field in the fourth, good for his eighth homer in just nine games.
With the score at 6-3, South Bend's David Bote cut into Beloit's lead by hitting a two RBI single on a ground ball to center field.
Just for insurance of the victory, Brizuela also blasted a solo home run (8) on a fly ball to center field in the seventh. The Cubs weren't able to come back as the Snappers won the first game of a three game series by a score of 7-5.
The pitching was also good for Beloit as Joey Wagman earned his sixth win of the season by hurling 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, and five earned runs. Lefties, Cody Stull and Jose Torres, did great in relief by combining for 3 2/3 hitless innings.
The Snappers are 45-68 on the year and 19-24 in the second half. Beloit will try to seal the series victory tomorrow night against the South Bend Cubs with another game at Pohlman Field at 7:00 PM. Tomorrow night is one of our Tap Takeover Nights. Chicago's own Finch's Brewery will take over our left field deck.
