Kernels rally ends one run short â fall to Wisconsin, 6-5

The Cedar Rapids Kernels had the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't push the tying run across the plate as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers erased a 4-1 Kernel lead for a 6-5 win on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Reliever Nick Tyson struck out Alexi Amarista and got Roberto Lopez to hit into a game ending double play to earn his sixth save and preserve the win for reliever Efrain Nieves (5-6)
Kernels starter Buddy Boshers allowed three runs on five hits and struck out nine over seven innings and left the game with a 4-3 lead. Wisconsin scored a run off Christian Scholl in the eighth with three walks and a sacrifice fly and Nick Pugliese (2-2) gave up two runs on three hits in the ninth.
Darwin Perez continues to swing a hot bat for the Kernels, going 2-4 tonight with 2 RBI and a stolen base. Matt Crawford was 2-5 with an RBI, Adam Younger was 1-3 with an RBI and Beau Brooks drew four walks and scored three runs.
The Kernels wrap up a nine game, eight day home stand on Friday night against Wisconsin at 6:35 pm. It's Jimmy Buffett Night at the stadium - the gates open at 5:00 pm as the Cedar Island Band will be performing before and after the game, plus the Kernels will wear special Hawaiian jerseys that will be sold via a silent auction during the game.
Three lucky fans will win a used car on Pat McGrath Used Car Night. It's also Z 102.9 Progressive Beer Friday where 16 oz. draft beer start at $1 when the gates open at 5 pm and goes up a dollar and hour until reaching full price. The evening concludes with a post-game fireworks show from Bank of the West, followed by the Cedar Island Band on the concourse.
