South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - After taking three of four from the first place Fort Wayne TinCaps earlier in the home stand, losing a series to last place Lansing would've been a tough pill to swallow for the Silver Hawks. However, South Bend salvaged a split with a 7-2 victory Friday night at Coveleski Stadium.

South Bend starter Wade Miley continually pitched his way out of jams throughout his 5.0 innings of one run ball. Miley (WP, 5-8) forced the Lugnuts to strand base runners in scoring position during the second, third, and fifth to record the victory. Miley allowed only one run on seven hits while striking out six.

Already up 2-1, the Silver Hawks busted the contest open with two runs in the fourth off Lansing starter Chad Beck. South Bend loaded the bases off of Beck (LP, 5-7), a former Silver Hawk, on singles by Victor Estevez, Reynaldo Navarro, and Rossmel Perez. After striking out in his first two plate appearances, Justin Parker came through with a two-out RBI single to score Estevez and Navarro, extending South Bend's lead to 4-1.

South Bend continued to add insurance runs throughout the game. Jake Elmore led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Navarro, increasing the South Bend lead to 5-1. Jonas Cuotto replaced Beck in the bottom of the seventh but didn't fare much better. Cuotto (ND) allowed a single to Parker and walked Alfredo Marte to start the inning. Clayton Conner grounded out to advance the runners and Alberto Diaz followed with a two RBI double, putting the Silver Hawks up 7-1.

South Bend opened the scoring with a tally in the bottom of the first inning. A.J. Pollock led off with a single and advanced to second on a hit by Navarro. Perez followed with a RBI single to score Pollock and put the Silver Hawks on top 1-0. Lansing evened up the contest in the second on an RBI single from Mark Sobelewski, but South Bend took the lead for good in the bottom half when Pollock picked up a RBI on an error buy the Lugnut shortstop Tyler Pastornicky.

Jordan Meaker pitched fantastic in relief of Miley. Meaker (ND) threw 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out three. Sean Morgan (ND) allowed a leadoff solo homer to Justin McClanahan in the ninth, but retired the final three batters to clinch the victory for South Bend. Despite the victory, Marte's ten game hitting streak came to an end with a hitless performance.

The Silver Hawks will begin a four game road series with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night beginning at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Ryan Cook (9-9, 3.46 ERA) will start for South Bend, with West Michigan sending LHP Casey Crosby (9-4, 2.53 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
