Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Ronnie Bourquin collected three hits including a three-run home run to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 9-7 victory over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field on Friday night. The Whitecaps won three of four games in the series.

Bourquin's three-run homer with two outs in the fourth inning against Dragons starting pitcher Chase Ware powered West Michigan to a 7-3 lead. The Whitecaps later added solo home runs by Jordan Lennerton and Gustavo Nunez and held off a Dragons comeback bid for the win.

Dayton trailed 9-6 going to the bottom of the ninth and, after a pair of doubles by Kevin Coddington and Miguel Rojas, got the tying run to the plate in the person of Byron Wiley, who had belted a two-run homer earlier in the game. But Wiley grounded out to shortstop to end the contest.

Ware (1-1), in his first professional start, suffered the loss. He worked four innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned) with three walks and no strikeouts.

West Michigan scored one run in the first inning to take an early lead before the Dragons answered with three runs in the second, all coming on a bases-clearing double by Kevyn Feiner, to make it 3-1. But the Whitecaps scored one in the third and five runs in the fourth to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Dragons could not get within two runs again until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Dayton finished with nine hits. Humberto Sosa and Tony Brown each went 2 for 3 with a walk. Wiley's home run in the fifth was his 12th of the year.

The Dayton loss coupled with a win by the South Bend Silver Hawks dropped the Dragons into a tie with South Bend in the playoff wildcard race with 22 games to play.

The Dragons (23-24, 51-66) travel to Fort Wayne to open a four-game series with the first place TinCaps (34-13, 79-38) on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Ezequiel Infante (1-0, 1.69) will start for Dayton.
