Bees Lose Game and Series to Peoria

Peoria, IL (August 14, 2009) - The Burlington Bees lost at Peoria 10-3 Friday night. With the loss, the Chiefs took three out of four from the Bees. Bees' pitchers issued nine walks in the game, which is a season-high.

Peoria took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished the lead after that. They pushed their lead to 7-0 scoring four runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning.

The Bees got on the scoreboard scoring two runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Fernando Garcia put down a bunt for a base-hit and moved to second on a throwing error. Adrian Ortiz then doubled, which moved Garcia to third. David Wood singled to score Garcia and move Ortiz to third. Nick Francis then hit into an RBI ground-out, which scored Ortiz and cut the Bees deficit to 7-2.

Peoria got their seven-run lead back scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. They added to that lead scoring one run in the eighth inning. The Bees scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth. Francis led the inning off with a double, moved to third on a ground-out and then scored on a Shawn Griffin sacrifice fly.

Tony Pena Jr. got the start for the Bees. He allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout and one walk in one inning of work and took the loss to move to 0-1 this season. He was scheduled to pitch just one inning as he makes the conversion from infielder to pitcher. Mike Lehmann pitched 3.1 innings allowing six runs on four hits with three strikeouts and seven walks. The seven walks are the most walks issued by a Bees pitcher in a game this season. Dusty Odenbach pitched two innings allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Barry Bowden recorded two outs in the ballgame without allowing a hit. Riquy Pena pitched one inning allowing one run on no hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Bees were outhit by just two 8-6. Ortiz was the only Bee with more than one hit going 3-4 with a run scored.

The Bees return home to Community Field on Saturday night and open a four-game series with Kane County. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 with fireworks, presented by the Greater Burlington Partnership, to be shot off after the game. Manauris Baez is the scheduled starter for the Bees.
