
Kernels pounce on Peoria, 8-3

The Cedar Rapids Kernels pounded out 14 hits and took the first game of a four game series with the Peoria Chiefs, 8-3, on Friday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kernels starter Tyler Chatwood (7-7) gave up three runs in the second inning, but settled down to allow just four hits over six innings and strike out five for the win.
The Kernels bullpen struck out four over three innings of work as Vladimir Veras, Johnny Hellweg and Andrew Taylor retired nine batters in a row. Peoria reliever Jeffrey Beliveau (5-4) took the loss, giving up a run on five hits and striking out four over four innings.
Alexi Amarista led the Kernel offense, going 3-3 with a double and Tyson Auer went 2-4 with a triple, RBI and two stolen bases. Roberto Lopez went 2-4 with an RBI, Gabe Jacobo was 2-5 with an RBI and Darwin Perez went 2-3 with an RBI and run scored. The Kernels chased Peoria starter Justin Bristow after the second inning as he allowed three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out two.
Game two between the Kernels and Chiefs is Saturday night at 6:35 pm. It's Cargill/Special Olympics Night featuring a huge silent auction and raffle during the game followed by a spectacular post-game FIREWORKS show presented by Cargill and media sponsor 94.1 KRNA.
