South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Taking advantage of two Silver Hawks errors, the Great Lakes Loons scored five unearned runs on their way to an 8-0 win over South Bend on Friday night. The Hawks were held to just three hits in the loss, were shutout for the 13th time this season, and didn't get a runner to second base until there were two outs in the ninth.
Great Lakes got the scoring started, tallying an unearned run in the bottom of the first. With two outs and the bases empty, South Bend starter Brett Moorhouse (LP, 5-13) issued a walk to Anthony Hatch, who moved to second on a passed ball by catcher Chris Davis. Kyle Russell brought Hatch home with a double to right, picking up his league leading 94th RBI and giving the Loons the 1-0 lead.
The Loons added to the lead in the third inning to take a 3-0 advantage. Alfredo Silverio led off with a double, and scored one out later on a double by Jaime Pedroza. Later in the inning, Nick Buss brought Pedroza home from third with a single to center field for his 59th RBI of the year.
A costly error in the bottom of the fourth broke the game open for Great Lakes. With two outs and runners at first and second, Jake Elmore misplayed a grounder at second to load the bases. Anthony Hatch unloaded them with a three run double to left-center, putting the Loons up 6-0.
Four of the six runs charged to Moorhouse were unearned, with the Loons ending his night after just 4.0 innings.
Yonata Ortega (ND) pitched the fifth, but things didn't get much better. Another error cost the Silver Hawks again, with Jerry Sands driving in two with a single to right. One run was unearned, bringing the total to five unearned runs on the night.
When Great Lakes starter JonMichael Redding (WP, 15-3) gets that much support, he's tough to beat. The right hander cruised through six innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out four. Redding's now alone in first place in the Midwest League with 15 wins this season.
Alfredo Marte had two of the three hits for South Bend, with Reynaldo Navarro adding the final hit (all singles).
Sean Morgan (ND) was the pitching highlight for the Hawks, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
The four game series continues Saturday evening with a 7:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch at Dow Diamond. RHP Randy Rodriguez (5-9, 5.61 ERA) will start for South Bend against RHP Nathan Eovaldi (2-5, 3.49 ERA) of Great Lakes. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
