Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio- Lansing pitchers Joel Carreno and Yorman Mayora combined to scatter six hits as the Lugnuts defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-1 on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The loss, the sixth straight for the Dragons, kept them three games behind South Bend in the playoff wildcard race with nine games to play. South Bend lost to Great Lakes on Friday.

Lansing took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Dayton tied the game in the second when Tony Brown singled to center, went to third on Mike Konstanty's hit to center, and scored on a one-out single to left by Miguel Rojas to make it 1-1.

But Lansing broke the tie in the fourth inning, collecting four hits in the frame against Dragons starting pitcher Justin Walker (0-2). The key hit in the inning was a double to the left-center field fence by Welinton Ramirez that set up the first run. A two-out RBI single by Justin McClanahan brought in the second run as Lansing took a 3-1 lead.

After the second inning, the Dragons had just one more hit until the ninth as Lansing added two unearned runs against the Dayton bullpen to take a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Dayton's Chase Weems doubled and Miguel Rojas singled Weems to third, but the Dragons could not get the tying run to the plate in losing the series opener.

Walker suffered the loss. He worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Reliever Shea Snowden replaced Walker and pitched well to keep the Dragons within striking distance. He pitched four and one-third innings and allowed just two hits, but the Dragons committed three errors behind Snowden leading to two unearned runs. Snowden walked no one and struck out four.

The Dragons finished with six hits. Brown and Rojas each had two. The two Dragons pitchers, Walker and Snowden, combined to walk no one and strike out 11 while allowing just two earned runs.

The Dragons host Lansing again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the series at Fifth Third Field. J.C. Sulbaran (3-5, 5.20) will start for Dayton.
