Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - JonMichael Redding threw six, one-hit shutout innings and the Great Lakes Loons recorded their second consecutive three-hit shutout, winning 8-0 over the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Loons now can clinch their first playoff berth in franchise history as soon as Saturday. Their win combined with the Dayton Dragons' 5-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts makes the Loons' Magic Number to clinch their first playoff berth just one.
Redding (15-3) picked up the win and is now the league leader in wins with 15. He allowed a second-inning single to Alfredo Marte, then retired 11 batters in a row before walking Jake Elmore. Redding has not allowed an earned run in his last 18 1/3 innings. His six innings of one-hit, shutout baseball followed Aaron Miller's outing the day before in which Miller did not allow a hit through six shutout innings.
Kyle Russell began the Loons' scoring binge in the first with a double to right field scoring Anthony Hatch. Then in the third inning, up 1-0, Alfredo Silverio doubled and scored on a double by Jaime Pedroza. Pedroza scored on a single by Nick Buss.
Great Lakes doubled their run total with three unearned runs in the fourth, capitalizing on a two-out error by Elmore at second base. The error loaded the bases for Hatch, who emptied them with a two-bagger. The Loons extended their lead to 8-0 with a two-run single by Jerry Sands in the fifth inning.
Four of the six runs surrendered by the game's losing pitcher Brett Moorhouse (5-13) were unearned. Moorhouse moves into a three-way tie for the league lead in losses.
The Loons' bullpen duo of Roberto Feliciano and Luis Garcia contributed to one-third of the shutout, allowing a total of two hits and no runs in the seventh through ninth innings.
The Loons could clinch their first playoff berth Saturday with a win or a Dayton loss. A special ceremony is planned if the Loons clinch. Game time Saturday at Dow Diamond against South Bend is 7:05pm. The 1984 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner Guillermo "Willie" Hernandez will appear at the ballpark in the Loons'1984 Tigers Championship Celebration, presented by MidMichigan Health. Dave Rozema, a right-handed pitcher on that team, also is scheduled to appear. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-ESPN.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
