
TinCaps Fall Behind Early, Lose 8-5 to Whitecaps

Comstock Park, MI - The Fort Wayne TinCaps trailed 6-0 after four innings, but fought back to bring the tying run to the plate in an 8-5 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Vince Belnome went 3-for-4 in his TinCaps debut and Jaff Decker slugged a double and triple.
Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt struggled through five innings, allowing eight runs on a dozen hits, walking two while striking out three.
West Michigan plated a pair of runs in the 1st inning. Ben Guez stroked an RBI double to leftcenter and later in the inning Alden Carrithers came home on a groundout to make it 2-0.
The Whitecaps piled on three more runs in the 3rd and another in the 4th when Billy Nowlin doubled into the left-field corner to push the deficit to 6-0. Fort Wayne got on the board in the top of the 5th as Adam Zornes blasted an RBI double to leftcenter, but West Michigan came back with two in the bottom of the frame on a double by Gustavo Nunez to make it an 8-1 game.
The TinCaps scored in the 7th when Belnome raced home on a wild pitch. In the 8th, another wild pitch plated Decker. Belnome then flared an RBI single to left to cut the deficit to 8-4.
In the 9th, Kevin Hansen singled to center, went to second on defensive indifference and scored when Decker hammered an RBI double off the right-field wall, pulling the TinCaps to an 8-5 deficit. Allan Dykstra singled to right to bring the tying run to the plate, but the next batter flied to center to end the game.
Watt (7-3) took the loss. Whitecaps RHP Erik Crichton (7-3) received the win, allowing a run in two innings.
The TinCaps fell to 87-44 for the season, 42-19 in the second half. West Michigan improved to 78- 53 on the year, 35-26 for the half.
Fort Wayne continues the four-game series Saturday against the Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers). Fort Wayne RHP Simon Castro (9-6) gets the start for Fort Wayne against West Michigan RHP Rob Waite (1-0) in a 7:00pm start.
