Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

June 14, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that RHP Matt Shoemaker and RHP Nick Pugliese will join the Kernels from extended Spring Training. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Sunday.

Shoemaker rejoins the Kernels after being assigned to extended Spring Training back on May 17. The Angels signed Shoemaker, 22, as a non-drafted free agent out of Eastern Michigan University on August 14, 2008. He pitched three games for the AZL Angels last season, posting a 1-0 record and 4.50 ERA in four innings pitched.

The Angels signed Pugliese, 23, as a non-drafted free agent on June 14, 2008 out of Stetson University and split time last year between the AZL Angels and Rancho Cucamonga. In a combined 19 games, he posted a 1-1 record, 1.37 ERA and one save, allowing 19 hits and seven runs (four earned) with 23 K's against five walks over 26.1 IP. He began the 2009 season at Rancho Cucamonga.

To make room on the Kernels active roster, RHP Vladimir Veras has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation and RHP Jeremy Thorne has been promoted to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League.

Shoemaker and Pugliese will be in Cedar Rapids and available for tonight's 5:05 pm game with the Kane County Cougars. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players currently on the DL.

The Kernels open an eight game home stand on Sunday, June 14th with four games against Kane County and Clinton.
