'Caps Lose Opener in Showdown Series

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Simon Castro was masterful Sunday afternoon as the Fort Wayne Tincaps downed the West Michigan Whitecaps, 9-5, in game one of their crucial four-game series. Fort Wayne amassed fourteen hits to support Castro who collected a career-high nine strikeouts. The Whitecaps now trail Fort Wayne by 2 games in the Midwest League's eastern division.

A beautiful afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark quickly turned into a forgettable experience for the Whitecaps. Fort Wayne scored a run in the second inning, three in the third, and four runs in the fifth. The Tincaps added a run in the sixth to jump in front, 9-0.

As was the case the night before, the Whitecaps did their scoring late in the game. West Michigan pushed four runs across in the seventh, sending 9 men to the plate, with Brandon Douglas' three-run double as the key hit.

The Whitecaps tallied an additional run in the ninth when Ronnie Bourquin doubled home Brandon Douglas to make the score, 9-5.

Castro (4-4) was dominant in the win. Along with his 9 strikeouts, he scattered 6 hits over six, scoreless innings. He walked one batter.

Whitecaps' starter Casey Crosby didn't fare as well. Crosby lasted 3 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Casey takes the loss and is now 4-2.

James Darnell and Sawyer Carroll of Fort Wayne each had 4 hits. Carroll needed a home run for the cycle.

Brandon Douglas finished 2-4 with 3 RBI. Ronnie Bourquin and Avisail Garcia had two hits also.

West Michigan will host Fort Wayne in game two of the series Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark.
