South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - After a night game on Saturday, and a bus trip into South Bend late last night, both the Silver Hawks and Great Lakes Loons looked sluggish on Sunday afternoon. The Loons were able to take advantage of run-scoring situations whereas South Bend stranded 11 runners on their way to a 5-1 loss.
After Ryan Cook (LP, 5-4) retired the first nine batters in order, the Loons broke through in the top of the fourth. Dee Gordon led off with a single and followed it up with a stolen base, his Midwest League best 33rd of the season. Two batters later, Anthony Hatch drove in Gordon with a RBI single, his 25th of the season.
Cook retired the next Loons batter and looked to be out of the inning as Austin Gallagher hit a pop-up into foul territory. However, the ball fell for an error and Gallagher ended up walking after a nine pitch at-bat. After Nick Buss also walked to load the bases, Alfredo Silverio collected his 26th RBI of the year and drove home Hatch with a single. Matt Wallach then put Great Lakes up 4-0 with a two RBI single, scoring Gallagher and Buss.
The Loons added on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Esteban Lopez was hit by a pitch. He then advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Gordon.
The Silver Hawks offense was shut down by the duo of Ethan Martin (WP, 4-3) and Nathan Eovaldi (SV, 1). Martin, a first-round selection of the Dodgers in 2008, pitched five innings and gave up one run and six hits while striking out three. Eovaldi entered the game and pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.
South Bend scratched out their only run in the bottom of the fourth. Nelson Gomez had a lead-off double to extend his hitting streak to five games and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Victor Estevez then singled to drive in Gomez and pick up his eighth RBI of the year.
The series continues with game two Monday evening at 7:00 PM Eastern Time on a Dollar Monday at Coveleski Stadium. LHP Taylor Sinclair (2-1, 3.02 ERA) will be in the starting role for the Silver Hawks, while Great Lakes counters with RHP Justin Miller (3-2, 4.52 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
