Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 14, 2009 - One night after shutting out the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Cedar Rapids Kernels were shut out by Kane County, 2-0, in front of 2,571 fans on Sunday evening at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernels were held to just four hits by starter Matt Fitts (2-5) who walked three and struck out six over six scoreless innings. Jamie Richmond, Justin Murray and Mickey Storey combined to hold the Kernels over the final three innings with Storey notching his eighth save.
Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (6-2) issued two walks in the first inning, which turned into two runs on a Texas League double by Grant Desme. Jeremy Barfield went 2 for 3 as he and Desme combined for four of Kane County's seven hits. Chaffee allowed only four hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and Kevin Nabors worked two innings of relief, giving up three hits with two strikeouts.
Matt Crawford went 2 for 4 as Roberto Lopez and Darwin Perez each added a single. The Kernel defense turned three double plays, tying a season high.
The loss drops the Kernels two games behind Kane County in the MWL West, and into a second place tie with Clinton with seven games remaining in the first half of the season. The Kernels play Clinton in a four game series to wrap up the first half, but look to the present and rebound against Kane County on Monday.
Game two between the Kernels and Cougars is set for Monday night at 6:35 pm with the gates opening at 5:30 pm.
