Kane County Cougars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Matt Fitts posted his best start of the season Sunday night, and three Kane County Cougars relievers combined for perfect relief as the Cougars edged the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-0, in front of 2,571 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was the Cougars' first shutout of the season, and they now lead Cedar Rapids and Clinton by two games atop the Western Division with seven first-half games left. The Cougars are vying for their first division title since 2004 and their fifth playoff berth in seven seasons as an Oakland A's affiliate.

Grant Desme provided all the support the pitching staff needed with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning against Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (6-2). Desme now has 24 RBIs in his last 29 games. He brought home Jason Christian and Dusty Coleman, who both had walked and stolen a base.

Fitts (2-5) pitched six innings for his first quality start of the year. He gave up four hits -- all singles -- and struck out six while walking three. Jamie Richmond worked a flawless seventh, Justin Murray pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and Mickey Storey grabbed his eighth save with a perfect ninth. The four hurlers did not allow a baserunner over the final 3 2/3 innings.

The Cougars (38-25) and Kernels (36-27) continue their pivotal four-game series Monday night at 6:35 CDT. Anthony Capra (1-3, 4.01) is scheduled to face Will Smith (3-2, 3.67).
