SOUTH BEND, IN - The Great Lakes Loons began their four-game series in South Bend on a high note, recording a 5-1 Sunday afternoon win over the Silver Hawks at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,758. The Loons have won four-straight, tying a season high and are now five games over .500, their best mark in relation to .500 since they were 9-4.

The Loons received efficient work from their pair of 19-year old tandem starters Ethan Martin and Nathan Eovaldi. Martin started and allowed just one run, pitching around numerous base runners in five innings. Eovaldi entered in the sixth and threw four scoreless frames for his first save, extending his scoreless innings streak to 17, the highest of any Loons pitcher this year.

With the game scoreless in the fourth, South Bend starter Ryan Cook surrendered an RBI single to Anthony Hatch to give the Loons the lead. Then with two outs and Austin Gallagher at the plate, second baseman Jake Elmore dropped a foul pop-up to extend the at bat. Gallagher and Nick Buss both walked to load the bases. Alfredo Silverio followed with a one-run single. Then Matt Wallach singled home two runs to put the Loons ahead by four.

After the Silver Hawks plated a run in the bottom half of the inning, Dee Gordon doubled in the seventh to score Esteban Lopez and put the Loons up again by four.

Martin (4-3) picked up the win. Cook (5-4) was charged a tough-luck loss, allowing just one earned run in six frames.

The Loons continue their four-game series in South Bend Monday evening at 7pm. Right-hander Justin Miller will start for the Loons against left-hander Taylor Sinclair. The game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
